In recent years, GLP-1 medications have become widely discussed in both clinical settings and the media as tools for managing weight and improving metabolic health. If you’ve heard names like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, or Zepbound™, you're already familiar with the most talked-about medications in this category.
But what exactly are GLP-1 medications, and how do they work? As a registered dietitian, I work with many clients who are either considering or currently using GLP-1 therapies as part of a broader weight management and nutrition plan.
💉 What Are GLP-1 Medications?
GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a natural hormone produced in the intestines. It plays a key role in regulating appetite, digestion, and blood sugar levels. GLP-1 medications like Semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound™) mimic this hormone to amplify its effects—helping patients feel full longer, eat less, and manage blood sugar more effectively.
🧠 How GLP-1 Medications Support Weight Loss
These medications work through multiple mechanisms that make sustainable weight loss more achievable:
1. Appetite Control
GLP-1 medications activate receptors in the brain that regulate hunger and fullness. Many users report feeling satisfied with smaller portions and experiencing fewer food cravings.
2. Slower Digestion
By slowing down how quickly food leaves your stomach, these medications help you feel full longer—leading to more controlled meal timing and less snacking.
3. Reduced Food Noise
Many people on GLP-1 therapy notice a reduction in obsessive thoughts about food. This effect, often called "food noise," may improve quality of life and support mindful eating patterns.
🔬 Tirzepatide vs. Semaglutide: What’s the Difference?
While both medications act on GLP-1 receptors, Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound™) also activates GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptors. GIP is another gut hormone that boosts insulin release and may contribute to greater weight loss.
Early studies suggest that Tirzepatide may result in more significant weight loss compared to Semaglutide—but your healthcare provider will help determine which option is right for you.
⚠️ Important: Only FDA-approved versions of these medications (not compounded versions) are reviewed for safety and effectiveness.

✅ Final Thoughts
GLP-1 medications can be an effective tool in a comprehensive approach to weight management—but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you're currently using or considering one of these medications, it's essential to partner with a registered dietitian who can help you build a plan that supports long-term results.
